Shards and Berries
Shards have been around since Ruby/Sapphire and their usage has varied from game to game. In the third generation games shards could be sold. In Diamond/Pearl they could be used to trade for one of TMs that taught a weather move. In Platinum they could be used to teach a Pokémon a move from a tutor, see here.
HGSS are no different when it comes to switching the use for the items up. You will find shards by using Rock Smash on various boulders located throughout Johto and Kanto, see here for more about that.
When you have saved up shards you can take them to one of two locations to trade in for berries. Unlike in DPP, where berries could be found scattered about the Sinnoh region, berries do not grow naturally and so coming across them is rare (unless they come from your mom, who's berries only reduce damage from the various attack types). As such, bartering shards for berries with the two jugglers may prove useful. Especially if you are looking for EV reducing berries, more on that under the Fuchsia City heading.
Violet City Juggler
The berries given by the Violet City Juggler tend to focus on curing status effects and restoring HP. The Lum berry is probably the most useful berry you will get here but that is a matter of opinion; as is the fact that the berries given in Fuchsia City are more useful.
You can trade shards for berries as many times per day as you want. For each different color shard you give, you will get the three berries listed to the right.

Fuchsia City Juggler
The Fuchsia City Juggler is arguably more useful, depending on if you have use for the Effort Value reducing berries. You can get four of the six EV reducing berries from this Juggler. Its odd that not all six are given here as the two missing, Qualot (Defense) and Tamato (Speed), both fit into the color scheme being used and could have been given instead of Poffin making berries... I digress. In all fairness, if they wanted to make even the amount of EV reducing berries awarded per shard color I guess that makes sense.
There is no limitation on the amount of trades you can conduct a day. For each different color shard you give, you will get the three berries listed to the right.
