The English promotional site for Black and White has just revealed the official names for Isshu's starters: Snivy, Tepig and Oshawott. The table below demonstrates the changes. As for this update affecting our PokéDex, rest assured we will work as quickly as ever to implement these changes.

In addition to these changes, the Isshu region will formally be known as the Unova region for English localization. The two version mascots, Reshiram and Zekrom (for Black and White respectively) also received new classifications and ability names. Reshiram, previously known as the White Yang Pokémon, will now be the Vast White Pokémon and its ability TurboBlaze remains the same. Zekrom, once the Black Yin Pokémon, is now the Deep Black Pokémon, and its ability TeraVoltage is now TeraVolt. Also now available are the new logos for the two games, pictured to the right.

With these new names, here's a few thoughts regarding the basis for the newly revealed names:

  • Snivy, comes across as being fairly obvious: Snake/Snide + Ivy
  • Tepig, we figure: Tepid + Pig
  • Oshawott, a bit more difficult: Ocean + Warrior + Otter
  • Unova, a very creative: United States of/(sound: ov) America

We'll continue to look into Oshawott, as there seems to be a trend with Snivy and Tepig where personality plays into the name, but nothing is striking us as obvious with that name yet.

Also, we worked over the weekend to compile and implement the following art/sprites on our website: Ken Sugimori artwork for Isshu native Pokémon, fifth generation pawprints and DreamWorld artwork. As well, The Unova Collection (changed from IsshuCollection to reflect region name change) was modified in such a way that would allow it to work as The493 does, all Pokémon in the SpriteDex with art by TopHat will have that background displayed on their page. This was the case for The493 and is now the case for Unova Pokémon with completed art.

As far as TopHat completing the Unova Collection, now that all official art is available, is concerned, he will begin the process fairly soon. It will work in the same fashion as The493 was done over the summer. Of course, at this point in the semester, we are all preparing for final exams and so those will have precedence... Stay tuned as we work to smooth out the schedule.

All of the above can now be found in the SpriteDex. Click here, as we have archives for each available for download. Links found in bold text on that page have been updated/are new. Special thanks to Bulbapedia and its contributors for initial rips of Sugimori's art, as well we thank Bulbapedia for the DreamWorld art. Thanks are also due to Veekun for the fifth generation pawprints.
