This gym has been completely redone for HGSS. The HM Strength is no longer required to navigate through it. Instead the objective is to move a gear to stop the water from falling on Chuck, which enables him to battle you.

Solving this puzzle is quite easy but you will be forced to battle three of the four trainers. Head east and up the stairs on the left. Face the trainer's back and talk to him to begin the battle. Once this is complete head back the way you came this time heading up the stairs on the right. Battling the trainer in this manner prevents him from blocking the second flight of stairs and having to do more running to get up them. Head up this next flight of stairs if you want to do the only battle that isn't necessary. Otherwise, head west over the bridge.

After crossing the bridge you will again be facing a trainer's back, talk to him to engage (trust me, this is the best way to do this, you will see why in a moment). After completing this battle head back across the bridge and down the two stairways you took initially. Move west, passing Chuck, and up the stairs there. This trainer will challenge you and lose. Head up the flight of stairs to the right and then up the flight of stairs on the left. Here's where the trust came in. Since the trainer standing there has already been defeated he can't walk forward to challenge and block the final flight of stairs (otherwise forcing you to go back to the other side of the gym). Up the last flight of stairs and to the right is the gear which you must switch in order to stop the water from falling on Chuck's head.

Having moved the gear you can now challenge Chuck.

Battling all trainers in this gym will yield 4,323 EXP and 2,496 PokéDollars.

To get Chuck to battle you again you must first locate him to obtain his number...

• Location: Talk to his wife outside of his gym

After getting his number you must call him Wednesday night. Once this is done he will appear at the Dojo in Saffron City.
