Shards & Tutors
Shards work differently from Diamond and Pearl compared to Platinum.
In Diamond and Pearl you could exchange 10 shards of the same color to a lady on Route 210 for a Technical Machine that would change the Weather Condition in battle.
In Platinum you can visit one of three different tutors who will take a varying amount of different colored shards and will teach a Pokémon in your party one move at a time (though the amount that can be learned overall is limited only to how many shards you have). Details are provided below.
Shards in Diamond/Pearl

In Platinum there are three different tutors located throughout the region that will each teach a different set of moves to your Pokémon. Below those tutors and their respective move-lists and requirements are listed.

This tutor is located inside of a house on the southern part of Route 212. He is most easily reached by heading east from Pastoria City.

Survival Area Tutor
To reach this tutor you will need the Rock Climb HM. Head north-east from the PokéCenter. You will encounter a batch of trees followed by a patch of grass, directly north is the portion of the mountainside allowing for you to scale it and reach the tutor's house.
